Welcome readers to my blog.
The purpose of this blog is to share my experiences in PA school with prospective students so that they can learn from me. At least that is my altruistic explanation for why I am writing this. The truth might be that I am about to embark on the most rigorous educational journey of my life, and I would like to unload some of the burden on you.
If you have stumbled upon this blog and have no idea what a PA is, what color the room is, or where you set your ChapStick (your lips weren’t chapped before but they are now, right?), allow me to explain.
A Physician Assistant is a member of one of the most sought after professions in the United States. As a matter of fact Forbes ranked it the “No. 1 Best Masters Degree for Jobs” whatever that means. What it means is that it is a tough profession to get into. Imagine a scene from your favorite zombie apocalypse movie (mine is World War Z). The scene where a few thousand zombies are all crowding together, trying to beat down a single door to get in. Not to sound pessimistic, but that is what it feels like applying to PA school.
The boring definition of Physician Assistant is: a limited medical practitioner who does exactly what the title implies: assists the physicians. In the Emergency Dept that generally means that he or she sees less urgent patients. In surgery that means that he or she does most of the preliminary consultation and functions as first assistant during the procedure. So the meaning of “assist” is a little different in each specialty. But they do just about everything that a physician does and they exist in every field. Their practice is limited, however, by the fact that they must have an attending physician at all times.
If you are one of the thousands of zombies trying to squeeze through the door, then this blog is for you. I am one of the lucky zombies. I got into an amazing program and will begin my journey in Hershey, Pennsylvania in just five short months. My plan is to write here at least once every other week to keep you updated on my experiences at Penn State. In the meantime, I would like to share all I know about getting into PA school. Whatever advice I have. I assure you that you made the right choice in profession. Hopefully you will see that getting through that little door isn’t about luck after all. With the right preparation and strategy you will get through, too. And then we can be zombies together. And… you know… eat brains and stuff.
Hope you decide to follow me! Welcome and read on!
